Basic Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Tips

Basic Search Engine Optimization (SEO) techniques that are so simple that anyone can do them.

While there are numerous tricks and tips to get better search engine placement (let alone the tips specific to every individual search engine), here are some very basic search engine optimization tips that anyone and everyone can do to help get their websites a little better placement in the basic search engines.

You should use this SEO checklist on every page of your website, not just the home page (although the home page isn't a bad place to start):

  1. My site has a title that isn't longer than 60 characters
  2. My site has a title that doesn't include the domain name
  3. My site has a title that isn't the same as the file name
  4. My site has a meta "description" tag that is no longer than 100 characters
  5. My site has a meta "description" tag that has less than 25 words
  6. My site has a meta "keywords" tag that has less than 250 characters
  7. My site has a meta "keywords" tag that has all keywords starting in capital letters
  8. My site has a meta "keywords" tag that lists a keyword then , (comma space) keyword
  9. My site has a meta "keywords" tag that doesn't use any word more than 3 times
  10. My site has between 6-18% keyword density
  11. My site has an index page that loads fast (not too much content or images)
  12. My site has NO BROKEN LINKS
  13. My site has NO UNDER CONSTRUCTION pages
  14. All images have an alt tag
  15. My code validates as valid HTML or XHTML code

Really interesting tips there. As per your tips you mentioned that keyword tag should be in capital, but as far as search engines are concerned, they consider both small caps ,and capital caps as same in keywords.
Moreover using something like, could be taken as spam.

Good comment Hawk. While it is true that the search engine doesn´t necessarily care about the "uppercase" letters when doing searches, we have found that conforming to standards (like Capitalized word comma space Capitalized word) allows the spiders to index the site more efficiently and makes it less likely that the spiders will miss something.

While there is much discussion whether commas are necessary, we have had more success using the comma separated words compared to non especially in terms of keyword phrases. For example see our article on getting search results on the first page.

search engines consider both small caps ,and capital caps as the same. But really focus on not adding to much words in your keyword section.
